After your first lesson, there's really one question on your mind: when does this stop feeling awkward? When does the ball start going where you aim it, instead of into the net or the next court over? There's no single answer — everyone progresses differently — but there's a fairly predictable sequence of stages almost every beginner goes through. Let's walk through it step by step, without inflated expectations or scary timelines.
Why padel looks deceptively fast from the sidelines
From the outside, padel looks simple: a small court, a stringless racket, a ball that bounces off walls. Plenty of newcomers arrive at their first session expecting to be rallying comfortably within a couple of lessons. Reality is a little different — and it's not about coordination. Padel asks you to solve several problems at once: track the ball, the back glass, your partner, and the opponents at the net, all at the same time. That's not harder than tennis, it's differently hard — and your first couple of sessions mostly go toward your brain simply catching up with the amount of incoming information.
If you're comparing yourself to players who've been on court for a year, that's an unfair comparison. It's more useful to compare yourself to yourself a month ago. Keep that in mind while you read the timeline below — it's a reference point, not an exam.
Weeks 1–2: the real barrier isn't the shot, it's the glass
Your first one or two sessions almost always look the same: the swing is fine, but the reaction to the ball bouncing off the back glass isn't. The ball goes somewhere you didn't expect, and instinct makes you swing too early or too late. That's completely normal, and it fades quickly with targeted practice.
What actually helps at this stage:
- Play short and slow, without trying to "win the point" — just to get your body used to the ball's trajectory after the glass.
- Don't be afraid to stand a step further from the glass than feels necessary — beginners almost always stand too close.
- Start with group lessons, where a coach breaks this exact skill down into drills, rather than playing "for real" against more experienced friends.
By the end of week two, most players can predictably return the ball after one bounce off the back wall — not gracefully, but consistently. That's the first real milestone.
Month 1: from "return it" to "place it"
In month one, the focus shifts from "don't miss the ball" to "send it where you want it." This is when the first deliberate shots show up: a basic forehand and backhand with proper body positioning, a basic lob, and first attempts at the net.
The key mistake at this stage is trying to hit hard instead of hitting accurately. Padel punishes power far less forgivingly than tennis: the court is small, and the walls return your opponents' mistakes straight back at your feet. A slow, controlled shot beats a powerful, random one almost every time.
By the end of month one, a reasonable expectation is:
- a confident groundstroke off the back line on 70–80% of attempts;
- a basic sense of where to stand at the net and when to move there;
- the first feeling of an actual "point," rather than a series of random hits.
If you're not there yet after a month of regular lessons, that's not cause for concern. Frequency matters more than "talent" — two sessions a week produce a noticeably different result than one every two weeks.
Months 2–3: from "don't get in your partner's way" to your first points
This is probably the most underrated stage. Technically, your shots already look like real shots — but the game as a foursome still falls apart, because padel is roughly 80% positioning and partner coordination, and only 20% the shot itself. Month two or three is when it starts clicking.
This is where it's worth consciously working on:
- moving in sync with your partner (when one of you moves to the net, the other doesn't get left alone on the baseline);
- basic on-court calls — who takes the ball down the middle;
- the chiquita and a simple block at the net — shots that don't need power, just good timing.
Many players start looking for partners at their own level and their first casual games outside of lessons around this point — it accelerates progress more than another private lesson, because it teaches you to read a real game instead of a staged one.
The psychological barrier: fear of letting your partners down
Padel is a four-player game, and that's not just a tactical difference from solo sports — it's a psychological one too. There are always three other people on court with you, and beginners often develop a very specific kind of anxiety: not "can I hit this," but "will I let my partner down." That fear, more than a lack of technique, is usually what makes beginners swing too cautiously, avoid tricky balls, and camp on the baseline longer than they need to.
This fades faster if you deliberately choose your first games with people for whom your level is an expected part of the game, not a surprise. A group lesson is safer in this sense than a random game with an unfamiliar group: the coach and the rest of the group understand they're playing with beginners, which takes off half the pressure. The flip side of the same effect: a botched point in a casual game with friends tends to stick in a beginner's memory far longer than it deserves, even though partners typically forget it within a minute.
A useful signal to watch for: if you catch yourself thinking "better not to hit it than to miss it," that's a sign the psychological barrier is running ahead of the technical one. A committed shot that goes out teaches you more at this stage than a safe little dink that goes nowhere.
Warm-up and the physical side people skip
Progress isn't slowed only by technique — it's also affected by what happens before and after you're on court. Padel involves sharp lateral movement, frequent stops, and overhead shots, and beginners often skip the warm-up exactly when it matters most: in the first few weeks, before the body has adapted to the game's specific demands. A warmed-up shoulder and forearm lower the risk of the elbow soreness so common among beginners, and a short calf and ankle stretch lowers the risk of rolling an ankle on a sharp side step.
Five to seven minutes before your first session is enough: light jogging or jumping in place, shoulder and wrist rotations, a few lateral lunges. This isn't competition prep — it's a simple habit that saves weeks of recovery if something gets tweaked in month one. Footwear is worth watching too: gym or running shoes support the foot differently than shoes built for sharp lateral movement on court — one of the most common causes of minor beginner injuries in the first month.
Six months: consistency and your first rating
By six months of regular play (roughly one to two sessions a week), most beginners reach a level that, on the international 1.0–7.0 scale, sits around 2.0–2.5: shots are consistent, rallies last more than two or three balls, and basic tactics appear — even if it's just "don't hit it at the strong player on the other side."
Below is an average reference for time versus level. It's not a guarantee, just a range coaches typically observe among players with regular practice:
| Time on court | Typical level (1.0–7.0) | What you can usually do |
|---|
| 1 month | 1.0–1.5 | Consistent return off the back glass |
| 3 months | 1.5–2.0 | Deliberate net positioning, first real rallies |
| 6 months | 2.0–2.5 | Consistent shots, basic tactics |
| 1 year | 2.5–3.5 | Confident play, first amateur tournaments |
| 2+ years, regular play | 3.5–4.5 | Shot variety, reading the opponent |
These numbers aren't a championship table — they're a way to see where you stand relative to the average pace. A coach can verify your level after a few sessions together, which is a far more honest starting point than self-assessment.
A year and beyond: tactics matter more than technique
After a year on court, progress slows technically but speeds up tactically. Players at this stage stop thinking "what shot should I hit" — the body already handles that — and start thinking "where should I place this to create an advantage two shots from now." This is where reading your opponent, targeting the weaker side of the pair across the net, and deliberate changes of pace come into play.
This is also the point where it's worth trying your first amateur tournament — not to win, but to see what everything you've learned looks like under the pressure of a scoreboard and an audience. Tournament experience teaches faster than ten regular lessons, precisely because there's no "let's replay that point."
What actually speeds up progress
Of everything that affects the pace of progress, three factors matter noticeably more than the rest:
- Frequency over duration. One session a week progresses slower than two shorter ones. Muscle memory in padel builds through repetition, not through the occasional two-hour marathon session once a month.
- Mixing formats. Group and private lessons solve different problems: group sessions give you match practice and a variety of opponents, private lessons fix specific technical errors fast. Either format alone progresses slower than the two combined.
- Playing with slightly stronger partners. It's comfortable to play with equals, but you improve faster where you have to stretch a little.
And here's what tends to slow progress down instead:
- Getting attached to power shots too early, at the expense of control.
- Refusing to break out of a comfortable rhythm — always staying on the baseline and avoiding the net, for example.
- Long gaps between sessions: technical skill without practice fades faster than it feels like it should.
Common beginner mistakes that steal time
A full breakdown of typical first-month mistakes deserves its own post, but three come up often enough to mention here:
- Treating the glass as an obstacle rather than an ally. Beginners often see the wall bounce as an inconvenience, when it's actually extra time to set up your shot — worth using, not fearing.
- Not coming to the net often enough. The baseline feels safe, but points are decided at the net at every level.
- Always playing with the same partners. It's comfortable, but it narrows the range of situations you get used to — and with it, your rate of improvement.
Tracking your progress in Tashkent
Progress is easier to sustain when you can actually see it. In Tashkent, there are a few simple tools for that: a coach can verify your level after a few lessons, which gives you an objective starting point instead of a guess; regular play at the same club against a familiar group of opponents shows the trend clearly; and basic gear matched to your level — a racket that isn't too heavy and isn't tournament-grade either — removes an unnecessary barrier while your technique is still forming.
The main thing is not to chase someone else's pace. The timeline above is built on averages, not records. Some players reach confident play in four months, others take a year, and both are perfectly normal as long as sessions are regular and you're enjoying the court, not just counting months until a result shows up.
It's also worth remembering that progress rarely moves in a straight line. Almost every player hits a plateau — a few weeks where shots seem to stop improving, or even get worse. That's usually not a step backward; it's a sign the body is picking up a more complex skill that hasn't stabilized yet. A plateau in month three or four is common enough that coaches treat it as a normal stage, not a reason to switch coaches or lesson formats.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many sessions a week do I need for fast progress?
Two a week works best: one group session for match practice, one private or solo session to work on specific shots. One session a week is enough for slower but steady progress.
Can I learn padel without a tennis or squash background?
Yes, and it doesn't offer much of a head start anyway: habits from a different racket and a different court bounce sometimes get in the way more than they help. Most padel beginners have no racket-sport background at all.
When should I switch from group to private lessons?
Usually after the first month, once you have a basic feel for the shots and want to quickly fix a specific technical issue — body positioning on the forehand, for example. Before that, group lessons give you more match practice for the same money.
Can I really learn padel from videos alone, without lessons?
You can pick up the very basics that way, but the walls make padel harder to self-teach than tennis: without feedback, it's easy to lock in a positioning mistake that's harder to unlearn later. Even a handful of lessons with a coach early on saves months down the line.
How do I know my current level on the 1.0–7.0 scale?
Self-assessment is often inaccurate. The fastest way is to play a few sessions with a coach or ask them to watch you play: a verified level on your profile is a much more honest starting point than a gut feeling that "I'm probably intermediate."
What if my progress has clearly stalled?
Most often it means your training routine hasn't changed in a while — same partners, same drills. Changing something (a tournament, a new coach, playing against stronger opponents) usually gets progress moving again.
